In August 1927 Willie Powell and Webster McDonald of the Chicago American Giants recently missed tossing consecutive no-hitters against a similar rival. Powell no-hit the Memphis Red Sox 5-0 on August fourteenth, and McDonald followed the following day with a 9-inning no-hitter that was tied 1-1 after nine; McDonald lost the shutout and the lead in the ninth (a run scored on blunders), lost the no-hitter in the tenth, and lost the game 2-1 in the eleventh.
